Neonatal citrullinemia: comparison of conventional MR, diffusion-weighted, and diffusion tensor findings.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Conventional MR, diffusion-weighted, and diffusion tensor imaging were performed in an 8-day-old girl with citrullinemia. She had severe hyperammonemia for several days. On conventional T2-weighted MR images, symmetric, confluent high signal intensity was found in the bilateral thalami, basal ganglia, cortex, and subcortical white matter. Diffusion-weighted imaging demonstrated decreased apparent diffusion coefficient in these areas, reflecting cytotoxic edema. Follow-up MR imaging at the age of 4 months revealed subcortical cysts, ulegyric changes, and atrophy, which were most prominent in the occipital lobes. Diffusion tensor imaging revealed decreased anisotropy throughout the brain, consistent with diffuse injury to the oligodendro-axonal unit. Diffusion-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging are valuable techniques for the detection of irreversible brain damage and for the characterization of hyperintense lesions on T2-weighted MR images in patients with the neonatal form of citrullinemia.

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy: comparison of conventional MR imaging with diffusion-weighted and diffusion tensor imaging: case report.
SUMMARY Conventional MR imaging, MR spectroscopy, diffusion-weighted imaging, and diffusion tensor imaging were performed in a 5-month-old male patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. On conventional T2-weighted MR images, symmetric, confluent high signal intensity was found in the temporoparietal white matter. A large lactate peak and decreased N-acetylaspartate were found in this region...
متن کاملNeonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy: detection with diffusion-weighted MR imaging.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although diffusion-weighted imaging has been shown to be highly sensitive in detecting acute cerebral infarction in adults, its use in detecting neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) has not been fully assessed. We examined the ability of this technique to detect cerebral changes of acute neonatal HIE in different brain locations. METHODS Fifteen MR examination...
متن کاملDiffusion tensor brain imaging findings at term-equivalent age may predict neurologic abnormalities in low birth weight preterm infants.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Low birth weight preterm infants are at high risk of brain injury, particularly injury to the white matter. Diffusion tensor imaging is thought to be more sensitive than conventional MR imaging for detecting subtle white matter abnormalities. The objective of this study was to examine whether diffusion tensor imaging could detect abnormalities that may be associated with ...
متن کاملDiffusion Tensor Imaging for Glioma Grading: Analysis of Fiber Density Index
Introduction: The most common primary tumors of brain are gliomas and tumor grading is essential for designing proper treatment strategies. The gold standard choice to determine grade of glial tumor is biopsy which is an invasive method. The purpose of this study was to investigatethe role of fiber density index (FDi) by means of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) (as a noninvasive method) in glial...
متن کاملMR imaging of the neonatal brain at 3 Tesla.
3 Telsa MR scanners are now becoming more widely available and 3 Telsa is likely to become the filed strength of choice for clinical imaging of the brain. The neonatal brain can be safely and successfully imaged at 3 Telsa. The improved signal to noise afforded by a higher field strength may be used to improve image quality or shorten acquisition times. This may be exploited for conventional T1...
